Why SCSEP?

For more than 40 years, SCSEP has helped millions of Americans find jobs in community service and the private sector. Each year, more than 100,000 participants receive job training and over 20,000 are placed with employers through 69 grantees, including 13 national non-profit organizations and 56 units of state and territorial governments.

The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is a state and federally funded, temporary employment and training program for mature workers age 55 or over who meet income eligibility requirements.

Continued business development and economic growth have led to labor shortages and increased the need for skilled and unskilled workers in several types of jobs. Employers are valuing older workers and what they bring to the workplace in terms of experience, loyalty, dependability and flexibility. Particularly successful are individuals who are willing to update job skills, especially their basic knowledge of computers.

How SCSEP works…

The Senior Employment Program provides 20 hours of paid training and work experience at not-for-profit agencies and local, state and federal government offices. These opportunities are designed to lead to employment outside of the program.

SCSEP participants, through these community service assignments, practice old skills, learn new ones, build self-confidence and increase their income. They are paid minimum wage, currently $7.15 per hour.

Each year SCSEP participants perform over 15,000 hours of work at community service sites throughout Onondaga County. The majority of this work is performed for organizations that serve older persons. At the same time, and with assistance from program staff, they develop job search skills used to obtain regular employment outside of the program, either full or part-time. Staff also helps participants access needed services available through the aging network. The SCSEP staff also provides job search assistance to any mature job seeker, regardless of program eligibility.
There are a variety of positions available through the SCSEP, including receptionist, general office, computer support, food service and related positions, child care, customer service, general maintenance and program assistance.
