The mission of the Onondaga County Department of Aging and Youth’s Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Program’s (IIIF) is to provide affordable, accessible resources to older adults to promote good physical health. This program targets medically underserved elders with the greatest economic and social needs in our community.
In addition to the following services, Health Promotion includes media promotion of health services including flu clinics, blood pressure screenings, and the County Health Dept. Women’s Health Outreach (WHO) Program (which offers mammograms and pap smear exams).
In 2005, Health Promotion grant money was made available to Senior Centers in Onondaga County to enhance the Fit for the Next Fifty program. Events were offered at senior centers, free of charge to all County residents age 60 and older. In an effort to promote the programs throughout the county, a calendar of events was created and published.
Strength and Balance
The Fit for the Next 50 Strength and Balance exercise program expanded to additional community sites and senior centers in 2005. The program consists of volunteer instructors trained to modify the age-appropriate exercises to accommodate seniors of all ability levels. The gentle strength training exercises are able to be done in a sitting or standing position, whichever is more compatible with level of ability.
