Farmers Market Nutrition Program
Every meal served meets strict nutritional
requirements and provides at least 1/3 of the Recommended Dietary
Allowances (RDA) for older adults as well as adheres to the Dietary
Guidelines for Americans (lower amounts of salt, fat, saturated
fat and sugar). Registered Dietitians conduct unannounced visits
at each of the preparation kitchens and dining sites in order to
ensure compliance with health code standards; observe food storage,
preparation and handling; test the food temperatures; verify the
menus served; train food service staff and seek comments and input from participants, staff
and volunteers. Our Registered Dietitians also provide Medical Nutrition Therapy, nutrition education, individualized nutrition assessments and diet counseling.
Dining sites provide nutritious meals
in friendly social settings. Informational/educational programs, counseling, health screening and wellness
and exercise programs are offered. Four non-profit subcontractors (Catholic Charities,
Jewish
Community Center, P.E.A.C.E., Inc. and the Salvation Army) provide
meals at our 43 dining sites throughout the week, as well as some
breakfast and evening meals. Reservations are necessary
to assure an adequate number of meals are on hand. A suggested
meal contribution is returned to the program to help support meal costs and expand services.
Senior dining sites for county residents age 60+ provide nutritious meals that meet one-third of Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for older adults. Please call for reservations.

Meals on Wheels (MOW)
Meals on Wheels (including special
diets) are provided to those who are incapacitated and unable to
shop, cook or prepare their own meals. Five area meals on wheels
programs (FM-JD Area Meals on Wheels, Kosher Meals on Wheels, Meals
on Wheels of Syracuse, Inc., North Area Meals on Wheels and Jordan/Elbridge Meals on Wheels) contract with
our office to provide meals to those who are at risk of poor nutrition.
MOW also recruits the more than 1,000 volunteers needed to prepare
and deliver the meals. Comprehensive in-home assessments are conducted
in order to link clients with additional services, as needed. The suggested contribution of $2.75
(for two meals) is returned to the program to expand the total number
of meals served. Four other MOW programs provide meals on a "private pay" basis.

Blizzard Packs provide a source of emergency food to Meals on Wheels clients so that they may have sustenance during emergency situations. Blizzard Packs are made available to
each meals on wheels provider for distribution to their clients.
Each of these shelf-stable packs provides one full day of emergency
meals to use during weather or power related emergencies when Meals on Wheels can not deliver meals.
The
locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables provided by this program
offer many important health benefits to seniors while also offering an economic stimulus. Farmers market coupon booklets, redeemable for New York State grown fruits and vegetables, are distributed at community locations to eligible seniors. Farmers Markets
in our county participate with us in this state and federally funded program.
To be eligible - you must be 60 years of age or older, and meet income guidelines (which change annually).
