Dear Onondaga County Residents:
I am pleased to present Project 2015: Looking Toward the Future of Onondaga County, a planning initiative that enables County departments to respond to the changing needs of our residents. The large baby boom cohort will begin to turn 65 over the next decade. This wave will have an impact on all communities and the services we deliver. New York State is experiencing a growth in the number of older people and Onondaga County’s population profile reflects the State in all respects, including a greater diversity in culture and ethnicity. In 2002, Governor George Pataki asked all 36 State agencies to consider this population makeup and project the impact on State services. The result was a report from each State agency on strategies that they needed to consider to be prepared for this population shift. In 2004, I directed County departments to follow the same process; looking at our population projections and determine what is needed in the next five to seven years to address priority areas identified by key department staff. Leading this initiative on the local level is the Onondaga County Department of Aging and Youth and Commissioner Marilyn L. Pinsky. The following report is the end result of Project 2015 planning by the first tier of County departments. We will be continuing this initiative with the remaining County departments and will incorporate those results into this report upon completion. We are excited about this opportunity to present Project 2015: Looking Toward the Future of Onondaga County.
Very truly yours, Nicholas J. Pirro - Onondaga County Executive
