Registered voters who will be outside of Onondaga County and those who are physically unable to appear at the polls on Election Day are eligible to receive absentee ballots. There are several types of absentee voters:

  • MILITARY Members of the Armed Forces and their dependents
  • REGULAR Voters who are out of the county, or ill on Election Day or Primary Day
  • PERMANENTLY DISABLED – These voters are on a permanent list and receive a ballot for each election
  • SPECIAL FEDERAL – U. S. citizens living abroad whose last U. S. address was in Onondaga County are only allowed to vote for Federal Offices. These include President, Vice President, U. S. Senator, and Congress
  • SPECIAL PRESIDENTIAL – Registered Onondaga County voters who have moved to another jurisdiction after the last day to register are only allowed to vote for President

Voting by Absentee Ballot

REGULAR AND PERMANENT ABSENTEE VOTERS FOR PRIMARY Sec. 8-400
Jan. 29   Last day to postmark application for ballot. Sec. 8-400 (2) (c).
Feb. 4    Last day to apply in person for ballot. Sec. 8-400 (2) (c).
Feb. 4    Last day to postmark ballot.
Feb. 5    Last day to deliver ballot in person to the county board. Sec. 8-412 (1).

REGULAR AND PERMANENT ABSENTEE VOTERS FOR GENERAL Sec. 8-400
Oct. 28  Last day to postmark application or letter of application for ballot. Sec. 8-400 (2) (c).
Nov. 3   Last day to apply in person for ballot. Sec. 8-400 (2) (c).
Nov. 3   Last day to postmark ballot.
Nov. 4   Last day to deliver ballot in person to the board of elections. Sec. 8-412 (1).


MILITARY VOTERS FOR PRIMARY Sec. 10-106 (5)
Jan. 11   Last day for a board of elections to receive application for ballot if not previously registered.
Jan. 29   Last day for a board of elections to receive application if previously registered.
Feb. 4    Last day to apply personally if previously registered.

MILITARY VOTERS FOR GENERAL Sec. 10-106
Oct. 24   Last day for a board of elections to receive application if not previously registered.
Oct. 28   Last day for a board of elections to receive application for general election if previously registered.
Nov. 3    Last day to apply personally for general election ballot if previously registered.


SPECIAL FEDERAL VOTERS FOR PRIMARY Sec. 11-202
Jan. 11   Last day for a board of elections to receive application for ballot if not previously registered.
Jan. 29   Last day for a board of elections to receive application if previously registered.

SPECIAL FEDERAL VOTERS FOR GENERAL Sec. 11-202
Oct. 10   Last day for a board of elections to receive application if not previously registered.
Oct. 28   Last day for a board of elections to receive application for general election if previously registered.

 

You may also request an Absentee Ballot by sending a letter to your County Board of Elections. The letter must be received by the county Board of Elections no earlier than 30 days before the election. The letter must contain the following information:

  •   Your name and date of birth
  •   The address where you are registered
  •   An address where the ballot should be sent
  •   The reason for the request (Vacation and location, Permanent or              Temporary Medical Disability, Etc.)
  •   The dates that you will be out of Onondaga County
  •   The signature of the voter


If the Absentee Ballot is mailed back to the Board of Elections, it must be postmarked by the day before the election and received no later than seven days after the election.

or HAND DELIVERED TO THE BOARD of ELECTIONS.
