The Online Tour - Programs Corridor

Programs Corridor - When we reach the Rear Control Center, we will go straight and through the door leading to the Programs area. The Programs area is home to all educational programs for inmates as well as the Training Division and the staff gymnasium. One of the busiest areas in the facility.

General Library/Law Library -  A small branch of the Onondaga County Library, inmates are allowed once a week to come to the general library to take out reading and reference materials. Over 1,000 pieces of material are exchanged monthly, attesting to the popularity of this area.  By state law, the department must provide a Law Library which is automated for ease of use.  The program uses a powerful search tool and the ability to print any section of law for inmate research.

Multi-Purpose Room - The multi-purpose room is where we hold religious services, special meetings, classes and a host of other gatherings. The two photos above show the room's two halves separated by a folding wall.

Classrooms - These are two classrooms used for education purposes. Inmates are encouraged and in the case of our minor inmates required to attend school classes. Our General Equivalency Diploma (GED) program material is taught and tested here. As a result, many of our inmates leave here with GED diplomas.

Computer Classroom -  The department provides a complete computer classroom and programs designed to help educate our inmates in the use of computers.
Staff Gymnasium -  Once used for inmate recreation, the gym is now used as a multi-purpose area for a full range of staff development and training. It is also equipped to keep staff in physical shape, with areas for running, basketball and handball.

Training Unit - The gymnasium also houses our staff training unit. Our training unit provides New York State certified training to all department and some non-departmental personnel. Classes range from first aid / CPR, to suicide prevention, and legal issues, just to name a few. New York State also requires that our security staff attend mandatory training sessions each year to maintain qualification. Every subject is instructed by certified staff instructors who know their duties and are chosen as the best in their specialty.
In addition to classroom space the gymnasium is used to train staff assigned to our Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT).  Other training is performed outside of the facility as well, such as firearms training which is done at an outdoor range.
