The mission of the Hazardous Materials Response Group is to provide specially trained and equipped personnel to assist county fire departments in the mitigation of emergencies caused by the uncontrolled release of hazardous materials and the intentional use of chemical, biological and radiological weapons.
- Maintain a team of qualified personal (volunteer firefighters and industry workers) specially trained, in accordance with local, state and federal directives, to respond to hazardous materials incidents
- Conduct drills or training sessions with local fire departments and/ or industrial and/or national defense concerns to familiarize them with operations necessary to mitigate a hazardous materials incident
- Provide technical assistance, in the area of hazardous materials, to all local emergency and public services
- Contain, retard, stop or neutralize the uncontrolled release of hazardous materials that pose an immediate threat to people, property or the environment
- Advise Incident Commander (IC) of measures to take when an emergency is beyond the scope or capability of the Hazardous Materials Response Team
- Ensure notification of proper agencies or commercial entities responsible for clean up of release
The Hazardous Materials Response Group has responded to a variety of
- incidents including:
- derailments
- corporate chemical spills
- pipeline leaks
- transportation accidents
- unknown substance calls
