National Infant Immunization Week
Getting your baby the shots they need is one of the most important ways to protect your child from serious disease. Infants and young children are especially at risk for infectious diseases. Today we can protect children from more diseases than ever before. In the United States, we can protect our children against thirteen diseases before the age of two. National Infant Immunization week is being celebrated April 19 to April 26, 2008. The Onondaga County Health Department reminds parents about the importance of keeping their child's shots current. Check with your health care provider today to make sure your child is up-to-date. Love them, Protect them, Immunize them!


Celebrate Safe Kids Week, April 27- May 3, 2008
"Safe Kids Night", May 2, 2008 will be held at Alliance Bank Stadium as part of a Chiefs home game. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. Members of Safe Kids Greater Syracuse Coalition will be on hand with safety displays, demonstrations, and FREE bike helmets for children on a first-come, first-served basis. The helmets will be fitted to each child. In addition, the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office will provide identification for children free of charge. Free Chiefs game tickets will be available at the branches of the Onondaga County Public Libraries, Alliance Bank branches or by calling the Onondaga County Health Department at 435-3280.

Bicycle Helmets for Sale
Spring is here, and folks will be back out on bicycles, in-line skates, scooters, and skateboards. Onondaga County law requires all those under 18 years old to wear a helmet when bicycling, skating, or on a scooter or skateboard. Helmets are available for $6.00 or $10.00 depending on income. Two helmet styles and a variety of colors are available at helmet sale locations throughout Onondaga County. For a location near you, call the Onondaga County Health Department at 435-3280. Cervical Cancer is Nearly 100% Curable: Make Your Appointment!
Cervical Cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. The good news is it is also one of the most preventable, treatable, and nearly 100% curable cancers when detected early. The best screening tool for early detection of cervical cancer is the Pap test including a pelvic exam. The Cancer Services Program Partnership of Onondaga County provides free or low cost physical exam and Pap tests throughout Onondaga County. Protect Your Pets with a Rabies Shot
Rabies shot clinics are held at various locations throughout Onondaga County and are free for Onondaga County residents. A voluntary donation per family is appreciated. Please be sure to keep your pet on a leash or in a carrier during the rabies clinic and bring past shot records with you. New York State Public Health Law requires that all puppies and kittens be vaccinated at three months of age. Get a booster shot at one year old and then every three years.
