County Executive Pirro receives Daniel W. Casey Award
November 18, 2002

This year Onondaga County Executive Nicholas J. Pirro was presented with the Daniel W. Casey Award. Each year the Empire Friends Round Table presents the Daniel W. Casey award at the New York Library Association's statewide meeting to a member of the library community or a group whose efforts have contributed to the growth of libraries or Friends organizations.

Throughout his career, Pirro has made several contributions augmenting the library community. Pirro helped create the Onondaga County Public Library System in 1973 as a member of the County Legislature. After he was elected to County Executive in 1988, Pirro led the effort to authorize funding for construction of Central Library in the Galleries in downtown Syracuse. During his term as County Executive he has supported the upgrade of library services to include an integrated online system, increased bandwidth for Internet access, major capital improvement plan for Branch libraries in Syracuse neighborhoods, and increased the library's books and materials budgets. He also initiated a plan approved by County Legislature to provide libraries within the County system a one-time grant of $500,000 for children's materials. The monies were distributed in the summer of 2002.

For his commitment to the posterity of the Onondaga County public library system, Nicholas J. Pirro was honored with the Daniel W. Casey Award.
