Two of the world's largest adult literacy groups, Laubach Literacy International and Volunteers of America, have come together to form ProLiteracy Worldwide. Laubach Literacy International was founded by Dr. Frank C. Laubach in 1955 and Literacy Volunteers of America was founded by Ruth Colvin in 1962. The two literacy leaders have merged to become ProLiteracy Worldwide founded in 2002.
ProLiteracy Worldwide, headquartered in Syracuse and Onondaga County, is charged with enhancing the adult literacy rate worldwide via educational programs and services, thereby assisting adult learners with obtaining the literacy abilities necessary to function in today's society.
Recently, ProLiteracy Worldwide held an annual “Launch Celebration” celebrating the merger of Laubach Literacy International and Literacy Volunteers of America, marking the beginning of this year's literacy events and acknowledging Syracuse as the Heart of Literacy. During the celebration, Onondaga County Executive, Nicholas J. Pirro and Syracuse City Mayor, Matthew J. Driscoll proclaimed February 26 the Heart of Literacy Day in Onondaga County and in the City of Syracuse.
