Fit for the Next 50 Program
June 30, 2003

The Onondaga County Department of Aging and Youth is in the process of recruiting volunteers for it's “Fit for the Next Fifty” Strength and Balance exercise program currently underway at various senior centers and community sites throughout Onondaga County. An informational session will be held at the Institute for Human Performance of the Upstate Medical University (505 Irving Avenue) in Syracuse on Thursday, July 24 at 2:00 p.m.

The Department is looking for persons over the age of 50 who are willing to donate their time to learn exercises appropriate for seniors. These volunteers will then go to additional community sites to lead an exercise program for seniors on a weekly basis at a date and time that is convenient for them.

The participation in Onondaga County has thus far been tremendous and the response to the program by seniors is overwhelmingly favorable. The Department of Aging and Youth recently formed a partnership with the Institute for Human Performance (IHP) in an effort to accommodate the large number of persons that have requested training. IHP staff will be donating their time and experience to assist the Department with the instruction of these new volunteers.

Department of Aging and Youth Commissioner, Marilyn L. Pinsky said of the partnership, “We are very excited to be partnering with the Institute for Human Performance facility and staff. Their Vitality! Fitness Programs provide tremendous benefits for seniors and allow them to exercise in a State-of-the-art facility. The match between the Department's “Fit For the Next Fifty” and the IHP's Vitality program is a superb relationship and one which I look forward to fostering to it's full potential.”

If you or someone you know would be interested in becoming a trainer, or if you would like more information about this program, please call Laurie Cook, Public Information Specialist at (315) 435-2362. Parking is available in the lot behind the IHP and will be free-of-charge for participants of the information session. Please call the previous telephone number for further details about parking.
