IndustryWeek selected Lockheed Martin's plant in Syracuse, N.Y. as one of the year's 10 Best Manufacturing Plants in North America. IndustryWeek, the leading manufacturing management magazine, selection of the 2003 Best Plants was based on the criteria of management, performance, and improvement.
The competition compared the management practices, the new performance metrics and improvement records reported by the applicants in determining the best plants.
Most of IndustryWeek's 2003 Best Plants apply the below business practices to their daily operations.
- They practice lean initiatives.
- They track operations on monthly, quarterly and an annual basis and compare themselves to other manufacturers in the industry.
- Their total inventory levels were down.
- They have defined and eliminate an eighth form of waste: "wasted talent."
- They provide continuous on the job training for their employees.
- The plant's OSHA incident rates are half of the industry average.
- They maintain a happy workforce, in part by, recognizing team and individual accomplishments.
