Goin' Someplace Special @ your library
SYRACUSE ---Onondaga County Public Library (OCPL) was one of twenty community agencies that participated in the fifth annual Children's Book Fest on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Syracuse, NY. The book fest offered crafts and other interactive fun in book-themed rooms set up in Syracuse City's Clary Middle School.
The library chose "Goin' Someplace Special" as its theme. Just as the library in author Patricia McKissack's book by the same name provided a safe haven for a little girl growing up in the 1950s segregated South, OCPL welcomed area preschoolers and elementary school students to listen to stories, make magnetic bookmarks, and sign up for their own library card.
The free event also featured musical entertainment, a puppet show, Native American dancers, local authors and illustrators, and appearances by Clifford the Big Red Dog and Arthur.
Initiated by the United Way's Success By 6, the book fest is a collaboration of several local groups including the Onondaga County Public Library, Syracuse University, the Syracuse City School District, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, The Post-Standard, WCNY-TV, WIXT NewsChannel 9, and the Upstate New York Chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators.
