Providing 'access to knowledge' @ your library
December 03, 2004

After 25 years of service, the Onondaga County's Public Library system's director Mary Frances Florek retired. She was replaced by a technologically astute and avid reader, Joyce Latham. Latham became director of the Onondaga County Public Library system in August 2004.

With a technologically intensive library background and a love of reading, Joyce Latham envisions a library as an integral part of family life. A safe place where the community can come together for 'dynamic activity.'

Latham explains that libraries have evolved to encompass 'access to knowledge' through more than just books. Today 'access to knowledge' comes from books as well as various forms of technological advances.

Latham believes the library's mission is to provide that 'access to knowledge' by all means possible. From the more traditional books to the more advanced technological means. She also favors increasing library hours, to make the safe haven for children and families to participate in recreation, learning and research through the free resources provided at the library more available.

Joyce Latham would like to see more people in the libraries and is dedicated making it a reality.
