Industrial pretreatment

Onondaga County's Department of Water Environment Protection assists local businesses in many ways. Not only does WEP provide an essential waste treatment service, it also assists businesses in disposing of certain materials and offers advice on reducing pollution.

WEP, too, is responsible for controlling wastewater discharges to the sanitary sewer system and the combined sewer system.

For that reason, WEP enforces requirements with regard to wastewater that is disposed of in the County's sewers. Industry and commercial establishments that discharge wastewater or other waste materials into the sanitary sewer system must meet the requirements of the "Onondaga County Rules and Regulations Related to the Use of the Public Sewer System."

Helping industry

A critical function for any industry is proper waste disposal. WEP is enthusiastic in its efforts to help industry reduce or prevent pollution and to dispose of any remaining waste correctly.

Our efforts range from explaining the rules and regulations for waste disposal to providing information on pollution prevention.

Permits

One way WEP protects the sewer system is to require permits of wastewater dischargers such as industries and waste haulers. These permits govern discharges to protect the sanitary sewer system, treatment plants, and the people that work in them. Violators may be subject to fines and penalties. Permits are necessary for:

  • Industrial wastewater discharges
  • Waste haulers
  • Ground water disposal
  • Masonry wash water.

Costs

WEP recovers its costs for wastewater treatment by two means:

  • Sanitary District Unit Charge
  • Industrial Wastewater Surcharge.

WEP personnel are always available to discuss costs with customers of our wastewater treatment and collection services.
