Participate in the “Angler Diary” program

Submit your Angler Diary tallies online now.
Use this diary when you fish in
Onondaga Lake, the Seneca River, or the Oneida River.

Instructions for the tally sheet

Thank you for participating in our research on the Onondaga Lake fishery. With your help, we will be better able to understand the dynamics of fish populations in Onondaga Lake.

Please record the number of all fish caught, regardless of whether you keep or release the fish, and note how many fish you keep in the Kept column of the online form.

Each trip should be recorded even if no fish are caught (enter 0 in the Caught column). It is just as important for us to know when fish are not caught as it is to know when they are caught.

Specific instructions

Date   Enter date for each trip.

Number of anglers   Enter the number of people you are recording information for on that particular trip in your diary. If two or more people are fishing who have diaries, either have each person record his own catch in their diary or record the whole catch in one diary. Don't do both because it will affect the results!

Type of fishing   Note "boat," "shore," or "wading" depending on the type of fishing you are doing.

Time   Write the time you start and end fishing to the nearest 5 minutes and specify "a.m." or "p.m."

Tagged fish   If you catch a tagged fish, please do the following:
- Record the tag number and species.
- Record the location where it was caught.
- Call in the information to 435-2260 x360.

Comments   Your comments are important to us. In particular, please try to specify the length and weight of any game fish caught and the type of area that they were caught in (such as open water, weed cover, rocky shoreline).

Zones   Enter the number of fish caught and kept from each zone:

  • Zone 1 includes Onondaga Lake proper, the Onondaga Lake outlet, upstream to the west side of Klein Island to channel marker 284, and the Onondaga Lake Outlet, downstream to the east side of Klein Island to the Route 370 bridge.
  • Zone 2 includes areas upstream of the Onondaga Lake outlet, past Channel marker 284 to channel marker 413 at the outlet of Cross Lake.
  • Zone 3 includes areas downstream of Onondaga Lake outlet, past the Route 370 bridge to channel marker 219 at the Three Rivers junction.
  • Zone 4 includes areas of the Oneida River from the Three Rivers junction (channel marker 214) to the Caughdenoy Dam and to Lock 23.
