P2 starts in the home

If we each do a little, it can add up to a lot.

  • When purchasing cleaning supplies, buy as little as possible. Also, use nontoxic alternatives. For example, baking soda and water can be used in place of ammonia-based cleaners. Instead of using drain cleaner, mix ¼-cup baking soda with ¼-cup vinegar.
  • Purchase rechargeable batteries. This reduces trash and toxic metals going to landfills and incinerators. In Onondaga County, batteries can be recycled.
  • Buy products that contain recycled materials.
  • Buy products in bulk, and avoid products with over-packaging. About a third of garbage is packaging which is thrown out almost immediately.
  • Walk, car-pool, or bike when possible to conserve natural resources and reduce air pollution from automobiles.
  • Use herbs, vanilla, or baking soda as room air fresheners. Use cedar blocks or chips instead of moth balls.
  • Use chili pepper, paprika, or dried peppermint as repellants.
  • Share your newspaper with someone else and use the Sunday comics as gift wrap. Approximately 40% of garbage is paper.
  • If you change your own automobile oil, recycle it at a service station or auto parts store.
  • Find out which local companies practice pollution prevention, and patronize their business. Examples are Strathmore Products, Passano Paints, Harden Furniture, U.S. Postal Service, Carrier, Garden Way (Troy-Bilt).
  • Instead of buying sandwich bags and brown paper bags, buy reusable containers and bags.
  • Use durable, reusable bags when shopping.
  • Turn off lights when you leave the room to save energy and money. 25% of the energy generated in the U.S. is used for lighting.
