Antifreeze - recycle it
Antifreeze is good for our cars, but it's not good for
the environment. That sweet-smelling green fluid in
your car's radiator can pollute water and kill fish
and other animals.
Antifreeze is easily recycled.
Many auto repair shops can recycle the antifreeze on
the spot. Many others will remove the antifreeze and
have it recycled at another location.
What you can do
You can take steps to make sure antifreeze is not
harmful to the environment:
-
Don't pour antifreeze on the ground. It may kill
your grass, contaminate your water. A puddle of fluid
can be dangerous to pets and wildlife.
-
Don't pour antifreeze into storm drains,
ditches, or streams. It can kill fish and other
wildlife. And chemicals in the antifreeze, such as
lead and copper, can end up in our wastewater
treatment plant's biosolids. This can be a problem
because, in Onondaga County, we recycle biosolids into
fertilizer.
-
Don't mix antifreeze with other automotive
fluids such as oil. It can't be recycled if it's not
pure.
