P2 in county government

Although the WEP Pollution Prevention Program was originally conceived as being applied to our customers, it can also be applied in-house. P2 opportunities abound in an operation as large as WEP and throughout county government.

In support of this, the P2 Program was instrumental in instituting a County-wide mercury policy, and is working hand-in-hand with WEP's Regulatory Affairs Section in the implementation of Universal Waste and Hazardous Waste requirements.

Through the implementation of Pollution Prevention in County Operations (P2CO), cost reductions and compliance assurance through source control efforts can be realized.

The P2CO effort can also be coordinated with an environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP) program. EPP takes into account raw materials, recycling, waste, and life-cycle analysis to choose products that are less detrimental to the environment. EPP can be applied to commodities and construction projects alike. The County has already taken steps to implement EPP strategies with respect to the purchase and replacement of mercury containing products and devices.
