Fact sheet

  • WEP has a 10-year contract with Waste Stream Environmental for operating a beneficial use facility to process biosolids into N-Viro™ Soil.
  • N-Viro™ Soil is produced using biosolids from the Metropolitan Syracuse Wastewater Treatment Plant, lime, coal and wood ash in a patented pasteurized process.
  • N-Viro™ Soil is primarily sold and used as a liming agent on agricultural land, and has also been used for top dressing for golf courses, athletic fields and for horticultural uses.
  • Since 1994, 625,000 tons of product have been distributed to more than 900 farmers in Central New York with a savings to farmers of $7.5 million in lime costs.
  • Biosolids recycled in 2001 account for 7% of the total solid waste recycled in Onondaga County (by weight).

Meeting standards

  • N-Viro™ Soil qualifies as Class A Exceptional Quality Biosolids under EPA 503 Rule and has been in compliance with this Rule since contract inception.
  • N-Viro™ Soil qualifies as Class I Compost under NYSDEC Part 360 Regulations and has been in compliance with these regulations since contract inception.
  • N-Viro™ Soil is registered with NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets as an Aglime Product (License #018001).

Winning awards

  • The New York State Water Environment Association, Inc. awarded WEP its Beneficial Use of Biosolids Award for cost-effective, environmentally safe, and publicly accepted biosolids beneficial use practices (February 2000).
  • New York State Governor George E. Pataki awarded Waste Stream Environmental with the Governor's Waste Reduction and Recycling Program Innovation Award for exemplary waste reduction and recycling practices in 1998.
