Welcome

The Onondaga County Department of Water Environment Protection (WEP) collects and treats 33 billion gallons of wastewater each year.

We serve residents and businesses in the County Sanitary District, which includes the City of Syracuse and parts of Lysander, Van Buren, Camillus, Onondaga, DeWitt, Manlius, Pompey, Salina, Geddes, Clay, and Cicero.

WEP also maintains 40 miles of streams and four flood-storage basins in the areas of Bear-Trap Ley Creek, Meadowbrook, Harbor Brook, and Bloody Brook.

The Department recovers its costs through the Sanitary Unit Charge that is assessed in the Sanitary District and the Industrial Wastewater Surcharge Program that is collected from industries.

WEP's 390 employees operate six treatment plants and over 140 pump and lift stations. They also maintain collection sewers. In Syracuse alone, WEP maintains four interceptor (major) sewers, thirty-two trunk sewers (8 to 90 inches), and other facilities.

We serve county residents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
