MOWAA's Pledge: End Senior Hunger by 2020

A groundbreaking research study found that as of 2007, there were nearly 6 million seniors facing the threat of hunger. Our goal is to match that number – with 6 million people who are willing to stand up and pledge to do what it takes to end senior hunger.

This is our movement. Will you Take the Pledge?

By taking this pledge you are committing to help Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) end senior hunger by 2020. You can be a leader in this national movement by volunteering for a local Meals On Wheels program, generating awareness about the problem of senior hunger in America, making a donation, sharing your story, providing ideas about how we as a country can end senior hunger together by 2020, and by doing anything else that you can to provide The Next Meal “so no senior goes hungry.”®

Image of an appleWhat's In A Meal?

Every meal served meets strict nutritional requirements and provides at least 1/3 of the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) for older adults as well as adheres to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (lower amounts of salt, fat, saturated fat and sugar). Registered Dietitians conduct unannounced visits at each of the preparation kitchens and dining sites in order to ensure compliance with health code standards; observe food storage, preparation and handling; test the food temperatures; verify the menus served; train food service staff and seek comments and input from participants, staff and volunteers. Our Registered Dietitians also provide nutrition education, individualized nutrition assessments and diet counseling.

Seniors Dining

Senior Dining

Dining sites provide nutritious meals in friendly social settings. Informational/educational programs, counseling, health screening and wellness and exercise programs are offered. Four non-profit subcontractors (Catholic Charities, Jewish Community Center, P.E.A.C.E., Inc. and the Salvation Army) provide meals at our 45 dining sites throughout the week, as well as some breakfast and evening meals. Reservations are necessary to assure an adequate number of meals are on hand. A suggested meal contribution is returned to the program to help support meal costs and expand services.

Senior dining sites for county residents age 60+

provide nutritious meals for older adults.

Meals on Wheels Image

Meals on Wheels (MOW)

Meals on Wheels (including special diets) are provided to those who are incapacitated and unable to shop, cook or prepare their own meals. Five area meals on wheels programs (FM-JD Area Meals on Wheels, Kosher Meals on Wheels, Meals on Wheels of Syracuse, Inc., North Area Meals on Wheels and Jordan/Elbridge Meals on Wheels) contract with our office to provide meals to those who are at risk of poor nutrition. MOW also recruits the more than 1,000 volunteers needed to prepare and deliver the meals. Comprehensive in-home assessments are conducted in order to link clients with additional services, as needed. The suggested contribution of $3.50 (for two meals) is returned to the program to expand the total number of meals served. Four other MOW programs provide meals on a "private pay" basis.

Each of these shelf-stable packs provides one full day of emergency meals to use during weather or power related emergencies when Meals on Wheels can not deliver meals.

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program Image

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

The locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables provided by this program offer many important health benefits to seniors while also offering an economic stimulus. Farmers Market coupon booklets, redeemable for New York State grown fruits and vegetables, are distributed at community locations to eligible seniors. Farmers Markets in our county and the Farm Fresh Mobile Market participate with us in this federally funded program.

To be eligible - you must be 60 years of age or older, and meet income guidelines (which change annually). One coupon booklet per year per household is allowed.
