Excellus BlueCross BlueShield to Repay Onondaga County Nearly $2.5 Million Dollars

Audit reveals overcharges for claims

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has agreed to repay Onondaga County $2,486,048 for overcharging of claims. At the request of Onondaga County, an audit was conducted by BlueCross BlueShield and an independent audit firm verified and validated the audit methodology used by BlueCross. It was determined that Onondaga County’s OnPoint self- insurance fund received excessive charges for out-of-network claims filed between 2006 and 2011.

“It is very important to me that we remain careful stewards of every taxpayer dollar”, said Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney. “We appreciate the quick and thorough response from Excellus and are pleased that the situation has been corrected and the County will be repaid.”

Onondaga County has received a commitment from Excellus to repay the money. Further; the issues that led to this overcharging have been identified and corrected.
