The Onondaga County Department of Transportation is currently accepting applications for the position of:

Heavy Equipment Mechanic I

Location: Various

Salary: $46,269-$51,159

Hours of work: May vary

Distinguishing Features of the Class:

The work involves responsibility for performing skilled mechanical repair work on heavy automotive and construction equipment, including hydraulic systems. Under supervision, an employee in this class performs skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work on heavy automotive and construction equipment that operate on gasoline drive power.

Minimum Qualifications:

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology or Diesel Equipment Technology; or,

B) Two (2) years of skilled mechanical experience or its part-time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of

automotive equipment, construction equipment or heavy trucks utilizing both gasoline and diesel powered engines; or,

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).


When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.

Note: Additional endorsements or certifications may be required upon completion of the probationary period.
