DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for performing technical work in the design and layout of publications using desktop publishing. An employee in this class works and consults with department heads, faculty and other staff members, both inside and outside the organization, in the general conduct of duties. General supervision is received from a Director or other administrative superior who reviews work in progress. Supervision is not typically a function of this class, but the employee may be assigned to coordinate work when assisted by work study aides, clerical assistants, etc. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Develops layouts, formats, and designs for publications using desktop publishing software and peripherals, such as scanners, laser printers and color printers.
Develops artistic and photographic graphics for publications.
Proofreads written material for proper grammar, punctuation and clarity prior to publication; proofreads typeset materials for error.
Makes copies and drafts for typesetting; chooses proper type faces; and lays out illustrations properly.
Designs forms, posters, pamphlets, brochures, catalogs and handbooks as required.
Assists in choosing the most informative, feasible, cost effective and efficient way of including graphics and narrative information in publications.
May assist in such administrative functions as monitoring expenditures, answering routine correspondence and organizing special events.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the practices and techniques of layout, format, design and composition of publications.
Good knowledge of the practices and techniques of the layout, format and design of artistic and photographic graphics for inclusion into publications.
Good knowledge of English grammar, punctuation and usage.
Skill in the use of desktop publishing equipment including hardware, current software packages, and applications as applied to layout, format, design and composition of publications.
Skill in the use of printing and reproducing machines such as headliners and composers.
Skill in editing and proofreading techniques.
Ability to layout and design publications, inclusive of graphics.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to interface effectively with service bureaus and printers to achieve desired product.
Ability to coordinate various work assignments and meet deadlines.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associates Degree in graphic arts, photography, printing communications or advertising technology, or a field closely related to the layout, design or composition of publications; or,
B. Two (2) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, involving the production, design and layout of print material or graphic design of publications; or,
C. Eighteen (18) months of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in publications, which must have included as the main function of the work the utilization of desktop publishing software; or,
D. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of A, B and C.

NOTE: Successful completion of a course in desktop publishing from a business or technical school may be substituted for up to six (6) months of work experience as defined in B and C above.
