LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST (OCC)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for the coordination, operation and maintenance of all the library's computer and audio-visual equipment. The primary emphasis of the position consists of training and rendering of advice and/or technical assistance in the use of computing devices and their software to library personnel as well as library patrons. An individual in this position is responsible for reviewing, analyzing and developing specifications for the implementation and utilization of various technology-based library services including but not limited to the Web, library management systems databases (subscription or otherwise), learning management systems and various virtual collections. The work is performed under the general supervision of the professional Librarians who are college faculty with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgement. Supervision is exercised over the public services library staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists library staff and patrons in the use of computing devices (and their related hardware/software) and audio-visual equipment.
Maintains library's computing devices and audio-visual equipment.
Maintains the library’s Web presence including but not limited to design, updates and enhancements.
Assists library staff and patrons in the use of available software.
Serves as the library’s liaison with the college’s Information Technology Department.
Oversees information technology projects within the library.
Creates and maintains various library or library-related databases.
Develops and manages the department’s technology and media related budget lines.
Considers and makes departmental recommendations on computing devices hardware/software and audio-visual equipment purchases.
Creates new computer programs for various technology-based library services or modifies existing ones.
May photograph and/or videotape special library events as needed.
May produce audio-visual presentations and/or slide/tape shows for staff training, patron education and public relations purposes.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the use and operation of electronic computing devices and related peripheral equipment.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Working knowledge of Website creation, development, design and attendant tools.
Working knowledge of database concepts and familiarity with current database systems.
Working knowledge of standard audio-visual equipment including but not limited to DVD players, “smart” classroom standard equipment and video cameras/recorders.
Ability to operate a computing devices in a networked computer environment including but not limited to networked printers.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to instruct others how to use various technology-based library services, computing devices hardware/software, and audio-visual equipment.
Ability to supervise the work of subordinates.
A. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a baccalaureate degree in educational media, instructional technology, communication technology, computer science, computer information systems or a closely related field, and two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, using media and technology for instruction or training; or,
B. Six (6) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, using media and technology for instruction or training; or,
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
