DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for providing direct nursing care and for overseeing the administration of a school nursing program. The School Nursing Supervisor performs professional nursing services at a school within the context of standards of nursing practice and in accordance with State laws and regulations and district policies and procedures. The School Nursing Supervisor works independently and generally reports to a higher-level school administrator and works in consult with a school physician. Supervision is exercised over a number of School Nurses and nurse aide staff. Does related work as required.


TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Provides comprehensive well child examinations with emphasis on prevention and physical development;
Provides pre-participation physical evaluations and new employee physical assessments;
Provides health guidance to prepare students to participate knowledgeably in their own health care;
Researches unique medical conditions and provides direction for staff nurses in addressing these health concerns;
Provides and incorporates new nursing theory into clinical practice;
Initiates, facilitates, and interprets preventative, developmental and diagnostic procedures within the field of practice;
Coordinates and directs the work of health office staff assisting in scheduling work assignments, assigning load and implementing adjustments, assisting staff in meeting program objectives, implementing and evaluating standards of care, and assisting staff in interpreting departmental policies;
Directs staff development activities including individual guidance and recommendations for staff education and in-service;
Recommends the selection of candidates for employment;
Develops nursing programs, policies, procedures and standards, recommendations regarding statistical requirements, program changes and staffing to ensure quality;
Makes budget recommendations;
Conducts monthly staff meetings to address regulations, changes and concerns;
Represents the interest of the Health Office staff within the school district leadership and with community agencies;
Acts as the health office staff supervisor and as a quality control agent, evaluator and researcher at health clinics;
Attends staff development programs and clinical practice seminars as needed.


FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of nursing assessment and diagnosis, nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical practices.
Good knowledge of current school health practice and current laws associated with the health and education of school age children.
Working knowledge of dietetics, sanitation and personal hygiene.
Skill in the application of nursing techniques and practices.
Analytical skills.
Research skills.
Ability to understand and follow technical oral and written instructions.
Ability to keep records and create reports.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of the nursing staff.
Ability to maintain constructive working relationships with students, parents, school staff and physicians.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to perform duties in accordance with the ANA Code for Professional Nurses.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.




MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a license and current registration from the New York State Education Department as a Nurse Practitioner with a specialty in one of the following areas:
1. Adult Health; or,
2. Community Health; or,
3. Family Health; or,
4. Obstetrics/Gynecology; or,
5. Women’s Health.

And two (2) years of nursing experience in a public health setting.
