PROGRAM COORDINATOR (SCHOOL WELLNESS)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for coordinating a comprehensive health and wellness program for designated school districts. Duties include responsibility for program development, budget preparation, purchasing and data report services associated with the support of the school districtís health and wellness program. Supervision may be exercised over a small number of employees, which may include professional, paraprofessional or clerical staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Directs and coordinates comprehensive health and wellness policy services for school districts.
Coordinates the work of local wellness committees in conjunction with community health providers to meet the objectives and guidelines of the federal and state school laws.
Works with School Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents in order to design program services to meet the needs of each district.
Compiles data to support the district and community health and wellness agendas.
Attends and participates in meetings, conferences and coalitions related to school health and wellness.
Develops goals for nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that promote student wellness.
Develops nutrition guidelines to promote student health and reduce childhood obesity for all foods available in each school district.
Coordinates with parents, students, representatives of the USDA school food authority, teachers of physical education, school health professionals, the school board, school administrators, and the general public to participate in the development, implementation, and review and update of the local school wellness policy.
Informs and updates the public (including parents, students, and others in the community) about the content and implementation of local school wellness policies.
Evaluates periodically the extent to which schools are in compliance with the local wellness policy, the extent to which the local education agencyís local wellness policy compares to model local school wellness policies, and the progress made in attaining the goals of the local wellness policy.
Assists with the program budget preparation and purchasing.
Supervises support staff.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of state and federal requirements for school districts health and wellness policies and procedures.
Working knowledge of the principles and practices of budgeting preparation and maintenance.
Working knowledge of the principles and techniques of supervision.
Good knowledge of agency program goals and objectives.
Good knowledge of community health and related human and social services organizations.
Ability to express oneself both orally and in writing.
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Masterís Degree in Education or a Masterís Degree in a *Health Education related field; and, two (2) years of **professional level work experience, or its part time equivalent, in education; or in a Health Education field.
*Examples of a degree that do qualify as a Health Education related field are: Health Education, Health Science, Physical Education, Public Health, Health Promotion, Community Health or Health Communications.
*Examples degrees that do not qualify are: Epidemiology, Nursing, Wellness, Fitness and Nutrition.
**Professional level work experience requires specialized and theoretical knowledge usually acquired through college education or through experience and other training. The experience involves independence of action and personal responsibility for actions.
