CHILD CARE WORKER II
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for supervising and performing various duties connected with the care and treatment of children who have chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional conditions. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising a small group of Child Care Workers I or other treatment team staff and/or independently performing specialized programs for these children following developed policies and guidelines. Supervision is conducted over staff activities to provide consistency, structure, healthy relationships and appropriate interactions for the children in the program. Contact is maintained with a multi-disciplinary team and its staff members to discuss the child’s progress and problems. This employee leads group meeting and participates in treatment meetings. Supervision is received from a Child Care Supervisor or other administrative superior who allows the incumbent leeway for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out details of the treatment program. Supervision is exercised over a small number of Child Care Workers I and/or other subordinate staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Schedules, plans, prepares, supervises and leads individual and group therapeutic activities in socialization, recreation, skill building and character development within the general framework and guidelines of the treatment plan for the children assigned.
Acts as a group leader, supervising the use of child care therapeutic techniques and treatment procedures; assists subordinates through example, suggestion, advice, training and supervision.
Observes the implementation of agreed upon interventions and supervises and evaluates staff assigned to the children in a group.
Provides emotional support for children and encourages participation in all planned programs.
Instructs, guides, and counsels children by direction, example and advice.
Leads and supervises the childcare group, creating a supportive learning and cohesive, interactive setting.
Participates in evaluation meetings, team conferences and discharge meetings on children.
Confers and collaborates with treatment personnel engaged in the program.
Assists in setting up and revising the child’s treatment plan in cooperation and coordination with other team members.
Discusses treatment progress, problems and revisions and reports findings to group members.
Insures that log notes and a variety of routine records and reports by other staff are up-to-date and completed in a timely fashion. Prepares a variety of records.
Insures that children in the group are sent to their scheduled appointments with therapists, doctors and other treatment staff.
Oversees cafeteria meals and transitions to programs.
Maintains a safe, clean, organized and child oriented workspace.
Attends training and stays current on such procedures as CPR and therapeutic techniques.
May carry out details of a specialty program or school based program when needed.
May operate a light motor vehicle for field trips, summer camp, etc.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of child development and behavior.
Good knowledge of principles and practices of small group leadership.
Good knowledge of conducting of games, crafts and sports.
Working knowledge of the policies and procedures of supervision.
Ability to care for and understand children with mental and emotional problems.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of a small team of subordinates.
Ability to relate and establish a rapport with children and tolerate deviant behavior.
Ability to promote efficient group functioning.
Ability to prepare a variety of reports.
Ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written directions.
Six (6) months of permanent competitive class status in the title of Child Care Worker I.
A) Successful completion of thirty (30) semester credit hours in behavioral science, *human services, education, recreation, child care or a field closely related to child care from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees; or,
B) One (1) year of experience, or its part time equivalent, as a teacher or teacher's aide or teacher's assistant in a school, education program or day care center; as a therapy aide in a center for the mentally or developmentally disabled; as a psychiatric aide in a public or private mental hospital; or, as a recreation leader responsible for scheduling and planning group activities in a municipal recreation program or a recognized recreation program; or, in a *human services position in a closely related field; or,
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
*Human Services comprise those career fields in which practitioners help others to solve their physical or emotional problems, or to meet their physical, emotional, or mental needs or to enhance their cultural, social, spiritual, or physical conditions.
