COORDINATOR OF ASSISTED OUTPATIENT TREATMENT
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for coordinating services of persons alleged to be in need of assisted outpatient treatment, and to implement and monitor the program for the Department of Mental Health as required by the mandates of the Assisted Outpatient Treatment Law. The incumbent is responsible to work with community providers, to monitor and coordinate service plans, to maintain oversight of court ordered service and to act as liaison with the court system in coordination and implementation of duties. Supervision is received from an administrative superior who allows the incumbent to utilize initiative and independent judgment in performing the functions of the position. Supervision of staff is not typically a function of this class. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Educates service providers, consumers, families, agencies, etc. about the law and the mental health service system.
Coordinates the development of treatment plans using community resources as a diversion from the formal petition process.
Receives reports of persons allegedly in need of assisted outpatient treatment and coordinates investigations.
Coordinates Onondaga County involvement in the filing of petitions by arranging examinations for suitability and for treatment plans, and by consulting on the preparation of treatment plans.
Acts as court liaison for the Department of Mental Health by appearing in court as needed, disseminating court orders and treatment plans, and by monitoring expiration of orders and applications for extensions of orders.
Coordinates the implementation of court-ordered treatment by insuring timely access to ordered services, including assignment of a treatment team or case manager.
Arranges for the provision of court-ordered treatment services, monitors treatment implementation and patient compliance, and coordinates actions when treatment is not implemented in a timely fashion.
Coordinates data collection and required reports to NYS Office of Mental Health.
Acts as liaison with program coordinators form the NYS Department of Mental Health.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of current theories and methods of diagnosis and treatment of the mentally ill.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of management, organization and administration.
Good knowledge of community mental health resources.
Good knowledge of principles and practices of program planning, evaluation and oversight.
Good knowledge of the methods and practices of community program education.
Working knowledge of NYS Mental Hygiene Law, rules and regulations.
Ability to prepare detailed reports in a concise and effective manner.
Ability to communicate in an effective manner with a varied group of mental health professionals, court personnel, clients, families, etc.
Ability to prepare complex written evaluations especially relating to court documents and processes.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a masters degree in social work, nursing, or psychology and five (5) years of post masters work experience or its part time equivalent, in the field of services for the mentally ill, or criminal justice or social work, two (2) years of which must have been in an administrative, or supervisory, or program planning capacity.
