COMMUNITY SUPPORT WORKER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The position involves responsibility for performing non-professional functions in the Onondaga County Department of Mental Health in support of the case management and clinical staff in the implementation of programs and the delivery of services to children, teenagers and families. An employee in this class may be asked to make home visits on either a scheduled or emergency basis providing support to families who have one or more members experiencing emotional disturbance. Assignments relating to the diagnosis, evaluation or treatment of participants are not performed by employees in this class. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Senior Psychiatric Social Work Assistant or supervising psychiatric social worker. Supervision is not a responsibility of an employee in this class. Certain assignments made to employees in this class will require reasonable access to transportation to meet field work requirements made in the ordinary course of business in a timely and efficient manner. Flexible hours that include some evening availability to meet with clients are required. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Provides support to program participants in areas such as advocacy, skill building and parent education, peer support and acquainting them with relevant services in the community.
Assists clients in the area of housing, advocacy, recreation, parenting skills, transportation and access to peer support networks.
Assists in the development of peer support groups and recreational opportunities
Assists families with access to information and educational opportunities.
Provides information to individuals or groups concerning services offered by public and private agencies.
Makes home visits on a schedules and/or intervention basis to provide support to families with an emotionally disturbed child.
May make home visits to follow up on broken appointments or to gather routine information.
Assists in the formation and implementation of peer support groups.
Assists in accessing and disseminating information about community resources.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of community resources and organizations.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and courteous relationships with clients, agency staff and the general public.
Ability to interpret agency programs, goals and eligibility requirements in language that promotes understanding of the programs.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to read and write and to prepare brief accurate reports.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Promotion Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status in the title of Child Care Worker 1.
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an associates degree or higher; or,
B) Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in a non-professional or professional position in support of a human services program in a public or private agency; or,
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
