DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for performing the duties of a Peace Officer, by assisting law enforcement officers in maintaining order in the community. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Carries out warrantless searches whenever such searches are constitutionally permissible and acts pursuant to his/her special duties*.
May make warrantless arrests.
May use physical force and/or deadly force in making an arrest or preventing an escape.
Issues appearance tickets when acting pursuant to his/her special duties*.
Issues uniform appearance tickets pursuant to article twenty-seven of the parks, recreation and historic preservation law.
Issues simplified traffic information pursuant to the vehicle and traffic laws whenever acting pursuant to his/her special duties*.
Issues uniform navigation summonses and complaints whenever acting pursuant to his/her special duties*.
Issues uniform appearance tickets in accordance with environmental conservation law whenever acting pursuant to his/her special duties*.
May possess and take custody of firearms not owned by the peace officer, for the purpose of disposing, guarding, or any other lawful purpose, consistent with the duties of a peace officer.
May exercise any other power to which a particular peace officer is otherwise authorized to exercise by any general, special or local law or charter whenever acting pursuant to his/her special duties, provided such power is not inconsistent with the provisions of the penal law.
A uniformed court officer shall have the power to issue traffic summonses and complaints for parking, standing or stopping violations pursuant to the vehicle and traffic law whenever acting pursuant to his/her special duties*.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of New York State Criminal Procedure and Penal Laws.
Good knowledge of the legal system.
Good judgment.
Proficiency in the use of firearms.
Physical condition commensurate with the needs of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Age: Candidates must not be less than eighteen (18) years of age.

Education: Candidates must be graduated from high school, or possess a high school equivalency diploma (G.E.D.), or possess a United States Armed Forces General Education Certificate.

Citizenship: Candidates must be citizens of the United States.

Driver's License: Candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license.

Conviction: Conviction of a felony or of any offense in any other jurisdiction which if committed in this State would constitute a felony will bar appointment. Conviction of a misdemeanor or of any offense in any other jurisdiction which if committed in this State would constitute a misdemeanor may bar appointment.

*For the purposes of this section of law, a peace officer acts pursuant to his/her special duties when he/she performs the duties of his/her office, pursuant to the specialized nature of his/her particular employment, whereby he/she is required or authorized to enforce any general, special or local law or charter, rule, regulation, judgment or order.
