DEPUTY SHERIFF CAPTAIN (POLICE)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for the direction and operation of a section or special unit within the Police Division as assigned by the Sheriff. Under the direction of the Deputy Sheriff Chief (Police) or designated subordinate, an employee in this class exercises responsibility for the services performed by a section or functional operation as designated, by directing and insuring that the identified activities are implemented, evaluated and conducted in accordance with all applicable laws, ordinances, rules, policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Department. Supervision may be exercised over a large number of sworn and civilian personnel in sections or functions allowing for considerable latitude in implementing and changing subordinates work activities; insuring consistent application of established standards and laws and the effective operation of the assigned position. Assignments are received through conference and/or in writing. Performance is reviewed through conference, report submission and observation. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Directs the activities of a division or special unit as assigned, and any other managerial duties as assigned.
Assigns tasks to subordinates, and reviews operations.
Gives instructions to subordinate officers as to methods of improving law enforcement work.
Directs raids and makes arrests.
Directs law enforcement activities at riots, serious crimes, fires or unusual disorders.
Directs the investigation of crimes where unusual and/or difficult law enforcement problems are likely to occur.
Dispenses information to staff and citizens regarding departmental policies and methods.
May supervise the preparation of complex federal and state clerical reports of the activities of the Sheriff's Department.
Supervises and conducts studies of workloads, use of personnel and equipment.
May serve as Duty Chief for the entire Sheriff's Dept.
May perform all duties of subordinate officers.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of law enforcement agencies.
Thorough knowledge of the New York State Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Vehicle and Traffic Laws, Ethical Codes and related laws pertaining to law enforcement.
Thorough knowledge of criminal law with particular reference to search and seizure of evidence, apprehension and arrest of suspects and protection of their rights.
Skill in the use of firearms.
Ability to use a computer.
Ability to exercise sound judgement in all instances based upon knowledge/training gained during academy programs, minimizing potential harm to the general public and oneself.
Ability to plan, assign and supervise subordinates.
Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with the general public and other governmental agencies.
Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
One (1) year of permanent competitive class status in the title of Deputy Sheriff Lieutenant (Police).
