DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for assisting the Chief of Fire in planning and directing the activities of the City of Syracuse Fire Department. An employee in this class may be required to assume command of the department in the absence of the Chief of Fire and First Deputy Chief. Under general supervision, the Deputy Chief of Fire directs and supervises the firefighting and fire prevention activities of the department. Assignments are received in the form of broad guidelines which allow considerable leeway for independent judgment and initiative. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports. General supervision is exercised over a substantial number of subordinates. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in planning and directing all activities of the department.
Responds to fire alarms and emergencies in the city or where assistance is required.
Directs firefighting and life saving activities at the scene of fires until relieved of command by a superior.
Inspects quarters, equipment and records in all department installations for compliance with regulations.
Receives reports and collects requisitions from fire companies and other departmental units.
Has command of the department when so assigned.
Uses a computer to prepare and write necessary reports and to enter fire reports as needed.

Thorough knowledge of firefighting and fire prevention practices, methods and equipment.
Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the department.
Thorough knowledge of the city building codes and fire prevention laws and ordinances.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of administration.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Good knowledge of the geography of the city.
Ability to assume command in emergencies and effectively direct and lead subordinates.
Ability to maintain discipline and to effectively supervise subordinates.
Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with the general public and with governmental officials.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One (1) year of permanent competitive class status in the title of Fire District Chief.
