DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

This class serves as a supervisor of a given area of a correctional facility. Incumbent may be required to assume the responsibilities of the Correction Lieutenant in said individual's absence. Work in this class is generally performed on a management level under the supervision of the Correction Lieutenant or Correction Captain. This position requires a significant amount of interaction with the Correction Lieutenant or Correction Captain peers and subordinates. This position exercises direct supervision over assigned subordinate personnel. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Directs security programs, activities and operations of an area of a correctional facility.
Works with Correction Lieutenant or Correction Captain to implement new procedures.
Discusses specific security, operational, and programmatic problems with respective Correction Lieutenants or Correction Captains and carries out the appropriate remedial action.
Issues orders to subordinate personnel assigned.
Continually observes assigned subordinate staff in performing their duties for compliance of orders, regulations, standards and proper procedures and evaluates accordingly.
Makes continual observations of activities throughout assigned areas with regard to security, operations, general inmate well being, sanitation, and safety.
Assists respective Correction Lieutenant or Correction Captain in employee disciplinary matters involving assigned subordinates.
Required to work a significant amount of overtime throughout the year.
Enforces all county and department rules, regulations, policies, procedures and standards, including those relating to employee time and attendance.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of Departmental policies, procedures, standards, goals and objectives.
Working knowledge of modern correctional practices and procedures especially those related to the day-to-day operations of a correctional facility.
Working knowledge of the principles and methods of supervision and management.
Working knowledge of the laws relating to pre-trial and post-trial detention of inmates, inmate security, parole and probation.
Basic understanding of the laws, rules, regulations and standards applicable to the secure operations of a correctional facility.
Ability to facilitate professional and career development among subordinate staff.
Ability to organize and supervise operations within an area of a correctional facility.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with peers, subordinates and supervisors.
Ability to speak effectively to peers, subordinates and supervisors.
Ability to prepare and communicate clear, concise and comprehensive oral and written reports and directives.
Ability to observe, record and evaluate activities against Departmental objectives and recommend remedial action as appropriate.
Ability to evaluate subordinate staff in the performance of their prescribed duties and take remedial action where appropriate.
Ability to work significant amounts of overtime.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status as a Senior Correction Officer; or four (4) years of permanent competitive class status as a Correction Officer.
