DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for skilled level work in a variety of maintenance and repair tasks in one or more
trades. Under general supervision, this employee is called upon to perform installation, maintenance and repair work involving electrical, plumbing, and steam fitting trades. The maintenance mechanic may devise their own methods for accomplishing assigned tasks and may work independently or in groups according to the job assigned. All work is subject to review through inspection in progress or upon completion by a superior. Certain assignments made to employees in this class will require reasonable access to transportation to meet field work requirements made in the ordinary course of business in a timely and efficient manner. When assigned to the Syracuse Housing Authority, this employee is subject to emergency call-in. Does
related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Installs, maintains and replaces electric wiring controls, circuit breakers, switches and light fixtures.
Installs, maintains and replaces plumbing lines, pipes and fixtures.
Installs, maintains and replaces heating pipes, boiler parts and plumbing fixtures.
Repairs minor parts for gas and electric appliances.
Repairs and replaces worn faucets, sinks, sewers, storm sewers, pipes, couplings, etc.
Maintains and repairs gas and oil fired furnaces, hot water tanks, circulating sump, sewage, vacuum and other type
pumps.
Takes pressure and feed readings for oil, gas and steam boilers.
Cleans boiler tubes, oil burners and checks all motors.
Maintains and services sewage system.
Maintains and services water system inclusive of water transmission and distribution lines, valves, meter pit piping,
and other appurtenances.
Maintaining air conditioning systems (Syracuse Housing Authority).
Maintain inventories as necessary (Syracuse Housing Authority).
Installs telephone and data lines, and energy management equipment (BOCES).
May operate motor equipment in performance of work of assigned agency.
May enter work orders on personal computer.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the operation, maintenance and upkeep of a high and low pressure heating system.
Good knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and tools used in the plumbing trade.
Good knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and tools used in the electrical trade.
Good knowledge of the installation and maintenance of an electrical system.
Skill in the use of the tools of the aforementioned trades.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
General knowledge of air conditioning systems (Syracuse Housing Authority).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Five (5) years of journey level experience in *plumbing, heating or electrical work.

*NOTE: Experience in the maintenance and repair of pumps, piping, valves and related appurtenances within a water
system is considered as qualifying plumbing experience for this position.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements
as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
