MOTOR EQUIPMENT DISPATCHER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for operating a central two-way radio system for motor equipment in receiving, sending and monitoring messages and keeping routine daily records of activities. Under general supervision of a Senior Motor Equipment Dispatcher or an administrative superior or crew leader, an employee in this class performs specialized work in receiving, monitoring and sending messages to maintenance or service crews from a central radio of a two-way communications system. Employees in this class exercise little independent judgement. Equipment is dispatched according to order by superior or pre-arranged standard operating procedure. Emergency situations are referred to appropriate supervisor or specialized emergency crew. An employee in this class also performs routine clerical work in keeping a log of the day's activity. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Transmits messages and orders between various units working in the field on construction, maintenance and repair, animal control, or park patrol.
Receives radio reports of location from motor equipment; tells motor equipment operator the official time of each report; records all communications on a simple radio log by posting unit number, time of transmission and location of unit.
Informs motor equipment operators of location of next work assignment at the request of superiors; may send equipment to an emergency work site following detailed standard operating procedure which indicates which type of vehicle to send to what type of job and/or which geographical sectors are covered by each vehicle.
Answers telephone; records public complaints, name, address, and type of problem on a simple complaint form and puts in appropriate pile; may answer public inquiries for service information such as garbage pick-up schedule.
Informs supervisors or emergency workers by radio or telephone of any situation which may require immediate attention.
Relays information received by radio to Police or Fire Departments when necessary; occasionally including emergency situations such as a crew overcome by sewer gas or involved in an accident.
May page department members by voice or by intercom system to inform them of messages or telephone calls.
May sort complaint slips by type of complaint or bureau of the department involved.
May do simple alphabetical filing of complaint forms.
May write information in a variety of routine clerical records, consisting mainly of simple logs and lists.
May request and record weather information on simple check list form for the supervisor's use in making crew assignments.
May use a data entry terminal or personal computer for filing or obtaining information.

Good knowledge of department operations, personnel, equipment and location of buildings.
Good knowledge of the geography of the local road network.
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Ability to maintain a variety of simple logs and lists.
Ability to learn simple alphabetical filing.
Ability to transmit messages with good diction and a clear speaking voice.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
