DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs skilled journey level work in the installation, repair and maintenance of marble, stone, ceramic and plastic tiles. Work assignments are received from an immediate supervisor with the employee having considerable independence in the methods used to achieve results. Work is inspected in progress and upon completion. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Prepares walls, floors and ceilings for tiles by applying plaster or cement bed; affixes anchor wire from wall, floor or ceiling to marble slabs.
Shapes tiles when necessary using hammer and chisel.
Polishes tiles with a polishing machine.
Operates a marble cutting machine to cut marble or stone into slabs of a specific size.
Patches and repairs broken masonry.

FULL PEFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and tools of the tile setting trade.
Thorough knowledge of the qualities and grades of marble, stone, ceramic and plastic tiles used in the trade.
Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Skill in the use and care of the trade.
Ability to understand and work from general instructions and to read simple sketches and diagrams.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of current Journeyman level Tilesetter license (Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union).
