DISTINGLUSAING FEATURES OF TBE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for performing semi-skilled work in maintenance and painting of public buildings, fixtures and various equipment. The maintenance aspect of this class requires an ability to perform. a variety of repair tasks related to the completion of a painting assignment. The work performed is usually below the skilled level in that a finely finished end product is not expected and the degree of skill required is less than that of a Maintenance Painter II. Instructions regarding the nature of the work to be done are usually specific and, although a Maintenance Painter I may independently devise methods for completing his assigned task, all completed work and work in progress is subject to inspection by a crew leader or other supervisory personnel. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Prepares surfaces to be painted by cleaning work area, removing dirt, scales, rust, old paint, grease and other foreign matters; scrapes, sands, spackles, patches and putties work area.
Applies paint to interior walls, floors, fixtures, baseboards, doors, frames, appliances and cabinets; paints exterior walls, porches, doors, window frames and fencing. May paint motor equipment.
Applies varnishes, shellac and other stains as necessary.
Sets up and dismantles rigging, scaffolding and ladders.
May do some sign painting, silk screening and stenciling.
May repair windows, floor ties and replace broken glass.
Cleans and stores painting equipment and materials.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices of the painting trade. Good knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work. Skill in the use and care of painting equipment. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

One (1) year of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in commercial or residential contract painting.
