DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for undergoing on-the-job training to become qualified as an operator of a wastewater treatment plant. An employee in this class assists in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. This is a trainee position involving responsibility for learning the duties and routines in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. Work is performed under the supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III for the preparation of becoming a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I. Supervision is generally not exercised by this class. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Performs study and reading assignments, observes demonstration and otherwise learns the techniques of operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.

Learns and assists in the starting and stopping of pumps, motors, air compressor and related machinery and equipment.

Learns and assists in recording readings from meters and gauges.

Learns and assists in making necessary tests for control of plant operation.

Learns and assists the keeping of the log of plant operations and related records.

Performs custodial duties in and around the plant.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONNEL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of the elementary principles of chemistry and general science.

Ability to learn principles and procedures relating to the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant with pretreatment.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Mechanical aptitude and good general intelligence.

Alertness, dependability and good physical condition, together with a desire

to learn and progress.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a New York State High School

Equivalency diploma.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

Within one (1) year of appointment, satisfactory completion of the

appropriate Wastewater Treatment Operator's course of instruction approved by the

Commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and

satisfactory completion of an in-plant training program. After the successful

completion of the one year traineeship, trainees are promoted to permanent wastewater Plant Operators I without further examination.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
