HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION CREW LEADER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for supervising a crew engaged in public works construction projects. Project assignments are of the type that, because of their size or specialty, can best be accomplished by force account. Work involves determining work methods and procedures as well as participating in the assignments. An employee in this class is responsible for the quality of the finished project. Supervision is exercised over trades people, equipment operators and laborers. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor. Technical direction is received from an engineering superior. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises construction and reconstruction of highways, drainage systems, culverts, curbs, sidewalks, gutters, catch basins and other related projects, lays out project to previously set grade stakes.
Receives construction plans and specifications, interprets plans and blueprints, estimates personnel needs, submits requisitions for personnel materials, schedules and coordinates the use of workers, materials and equipment.
Supervises and participates in numerous activities in plowing, sanding and salting of roads during the winter season.
Keeps complete and accurate records and makes reports of work activities and materials used.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and equipment common to public works construction projects.
Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions of public works construction.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and plans.
Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of crews and equipment.
Ability to understand, interpret, and effectively carry out written or oral instructions accompanied by construction plans.
Ability to perform basic engineering functions such as using hard levels or string levels to set grades.
Ability to keep records and make reports.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Promotion Two (2) years of permanent non competitive class status in the title
of Labor Crew Leader.
Four (4) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in highway maintenance or construction work, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
At time of appointment, possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial drivers license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle being operated.
