DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS



The work involves responsibility for planning, organizing and directing the management and control of an automotive repair shop. Under the general supervision of an administrative superior, an employee in this class supervises a staff performing maintenance and repairs, production coordination and scheduling, parts and record keeping, and clerical support services for all motor driven equipment and motor vehicles in an automotive repair shop. The Garage Manager is a non-working supervisor of a number of mechanics and other related classifications performing skilled and semi-skilled automotive repair, automotive servicing and fleet use scheduling. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES



Supervises and directs a number of personnel performing maintenance, repair, parts, record keeping, and clerical support service activities in an automotive repair shop.

Reviews work orders and records to identify factors, such as rates of productivity, types of repair tasks to be

performed, and time to perform such tasks, to identify problems and improve effective utilization of staff,

equipment, supplies and space.

Recommends changes in maintenance procedures, fleet use and utilization of staff.

Observes operations and meets with staff to ensure that work schedules are met and that department rules and

regulations are followed.

Delegates authority to fleet line supervisors and reviews use of delegated authority insofar as quality and

quantity of work are concerned through observation of garage activities and review of work records.

Recommends budget requirements for the garage including staffing, parts, supplies and equipment needs.

Gathers, compiles and reports numerical and non-numerical data to departmental management to identify rates of productivity, costs of maintenance, repair and servicing vehicles.

Recommends those vehicles that should be replaced due to age, or costliness of maintenance based upon past cost of repair and anticipated cost of repair.

Supervises the issuing and storing of equipment, supplies, materials and motor vehicles.



FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS



Good knowledge of the principles and practices of administering repair shop operations.

Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.

Working knowledge of the techniques of automotive repair, operation and use of automotive and other motor driven equipment.

Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of shop equipment.

Working knowledge of the proper use of automotive repair parts, equipment, materials and supplies.

Working knowledge of the storeskeeping and inventory control practices followed in a motor equipment maintenance shop.

Ability to organize and direct the activities of repair shop employees.

Ability to identify problems and take effective remedial action.

Ability to supervise a number of employees involved in repair shop activities.

Ability to make recommendations concerning budget requirements.

Ability to store and inventory material.

Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Ability to prepare reports.

Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



Promotion:

One (1) year of permanent competitive class status in the title of Garage Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, Cont.

Open Competitive:

A. Two (2) years of work experience in supervising personnel engaged in automotive repairs, maintenance and servicing; or,

B. Four (4) years of work experience in a parts department or customer service department of an automotive dealership or automotive repair establishment, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
