DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for planning, coordinating and overseeing the maintenance and daily facility operations of a park. Under the general supervision of a Park Superintendent, an employee in this class is responsible for planning, prioritizing, assigning and supervising the work of maintenance and grounds crews. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining and tracking current inventory of supplies and equipment and will assist in requisitions to procure needed equipment and materials including working with outside vendors when necessary.
The Park Supervisor has direct public contact in order to ensure a high level of citizen satisfaction with the park by gathering and responding to customer feedback, including the investigation of customer suggestions and complaints relating to grounds, facilities and employees under their charge, coordinating maintenance needs for special events by working with event coordinators and handling questions and concerns regarding park usage. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Directs and supervises staff engaged in maintenance and daily facility operations of a park, which includes planning and assigning work and creating work schedules for staff.
Plans, schedules and prioritizes a variety of ongoing facility and grounds maintenance projects.
Performs staff and site evaluations to assure projects are adhering to schedule and that County Parks Standards for safety and facilities appearance are being met.
Monitors and tracks inventory and assists with procuring additional inventory and equipment through requisitions when necessary.
May work with outside vendors through receiving price quotes and establishing scopes of work for various projects.
Utilizes and instructs others in the use of specialized tools such as motor equipment and chain saws when necessary.
Works with the public to address suggestions for park improvement and concerns related to the customerís usage of the park and enjoyment of the parkís well maintained grounds and facilities.
Keeps records and reports of work done, time spent, and equipment and supplies used.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and practices common to buildings and grounds maintenance and repair.
Good knowledge of proper park maintenance methods for buildings, grounds and equipment.
Good knowledge of supervisory techniques.
Good knowledge of motor equipment operation.
Good knowledge of park policies, rules and regulations.
Skilled in the use of a variety of hand and power tools, simple machinery and light motor equipment.
Ability to set priorities for park operations and maintenance.
Ability to maintain records on materials and supplies used and equipment usage.
Ability to plan, schedule, assign and supervise the work of subordinate employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
Two (2) years of permanent Non-Competitive class status in the title of Park Labor Crew Leader; or,
Three (3) years of permanent Non-Competitive class status in the title of Motor Equipment Operator I.
A.) Four (4) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the construction, operation and/or maintenance of a park or recreational facility, nursery, golf course, or other facility that included maintenance management of buildings and grounds. One (1) year of the work experience must be in the supervision* of employees. Or,
B.) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Associates in park administration, recreation, forestry, natural resources, environmental management or a related field and two (2) years of work experience in the construction, operation and/or maintenance of a park or recreational facility, nursery, golf course, or other facility that included maintenance management of buildings and grounds. One (1) year of the work experience must be in the supervision* of employees.
*Supervision is defined as the responsible direction and control of subordinate employees. This involves the assignment of work, approval of work, and the training, evaluation, and discipline of employees. The supervision aspects must be an integral part of the job; not incidental or occasional.
