DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for pursuing clean renewable energy opportunities and for increasing energy efficiency for a municipality. A person in this position will investigate current facility operations and identify methods, technologies, and process changes that may be implemented to reduce energy costs. The Director of Energy and Sustainability reports to an administrative supervisor and has wide latitude to make decisions. Supervision is not a typical function of this class. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Creates, directs, manages, administers and evaluates an energy management and sustainability program;

Monitors energy and utility budget;

Implements and measures performance relative to environmental initiatives;

Identifies and implements renewable energy and conservation projects;

Manages energy audits and contracts for engineering and consulting services;

Oversees energy reduction programs;

Develops and maintains contact with federal and state agencies regulating and overseeing energy consumption; monitors state and national energy policy trends.

Develops working relationships with energy consumers, tradespeople, and contractors.

Identifies opportunities to reduce energy costs and improve efficiency;

Tracks, analyzes and advocates for legislation in the area of energy and environmental sustainability;

Monitors and applies for grants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Department of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelorís Degree in Engineering or closely related field and 5 (five) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the energy industry. Examples of acceptable experience are commodity procurement, or renewable or conservation project development and implementation.
