DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for planning, assigning and supervising the custodial operations in a large school district or a number of public buildings. Under general supervision, an employee in this class has responsibility for the overall operation of a custodial staff engaged in the cleaning and minor maintenance of a large number of buildings within a school district or other governmental building complexes. The employee works with considerable independence in planning, scheduling and supervising the custodial operations. Supervision is exercised over a large number of custodial personnel. Work is performed under an administrative superior who reviews work through conference and occasional inspection. Performs related work as required.


TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Plans, assigns, supervises and inspects work by custodial personnel to insure proper housekeeping, heating, ventilation and care of furnishings and equipment for a large number of buildings within a school district or governmental building complex.
Assists in planning and establishing specifications for all supplies and materials utilized in the custodial operation of a school district or a government building complex; initiates requisitioning, distribution and storage of custodial supplies.
Maintains appropriate records necessary to the efficient and economic operation of this function.
Advises of necessary changes such as physical set up and new cleaning methods and equipment; initiates, organizes and maintains appropriate in-service training programs for all custodial personnel.
Assists in preparing and administering of the annual budget established for the custodial operation.


FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of modern methods, equipment and supplies used in cleaning and sanitizing public and school facilities.
Good knowledge of management principles and practices as related to large-scale custodial and cleaning operations.
Working knowledge of establishing and maintaining proper methods, procedures and records as related to the hiring and assigning of personnel, ordering and maintaining stock supplies as related to the hiring and assigning of personnel, ordering and maintaining stock supplies used in the custodial and cleaning operations.
Ability to establish and evaluate efficient and economic cleaning operations.
Ability to supervise personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Promotion:

Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status in the title of Custodian III.


Open Competitive

Five (5) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in cleaning and maintenance, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
