DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for cleaning and performing minor maintenance to various types of fire equipment and to the firehouse property. Under supervision, an employee in this class must ensure that all fire equipment and property is ready for immediate use and acts as a watchman at the firehouse on an assigned shift. Supervision of employees in not normally exercised in this class. Does related work as required.


TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Ensures that fire equipment is ready to go immediately after the alarm is sounded.
Acts as a watchman at the firehouse during an assigned shift.
Cleans fire apparatus including trucks, pumps, turn out gear, and other fire equipment.
Occasionally makes minor repairs to fire fighting and auxiliary equipment.
Cleans, sweeps and mops the firehouse.
Fills fire trucks with gas and ensures they are in working order.
May call automotive mechanics or other skilled trades people to explain the nature and extent of damage to various types of fire fighting equipment or may report this supervisor.
May maintain simple records and reports of repairs made or that need to be made.

Some knowledge of basic cleaning maintenance activities.
Some knowledge of minor maintenance.
Some knowledge of fire apparatus.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and assume initiative.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
