Water Chestnut Eradication


Legal Notice: Chemical Treatment of Water Chestnut on the Seneca Rivers -Onondaga County

The Onondaga County Health Department has successfully applied for aquatic permits issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to chemically treat 147 acres of water chestnut infestation in the following areas:

i) Forty-eight (48) acres from approximately .75 miles southwest of the east entrance of the State Ditch Cut downstream to the vicinity of buoy 375 (towns of Lysander and Van Buren), [MAP]

ii) Twelve (12) acres from west of Dead Creek including the south side of Maloney Island to the Route 690 Overpass (towns of Lysander and Van Buren), [MAP]

iii) Eight (8) acres from the vicinity west of buoy 346 including the north side of Maloney Island to the Route 690 Overpass (town of Lysander), [MAP]

iv), Five (5) acres from the Route 690 Overpass to the vicinity of buoy 332 (town of Lysander, village of Baldwinsville), [MAP]

v) Twenty-two (22) acres from the Route 690 Overpass to the vicinity of buoy 331 upstream from the Baldwinsville Dam (town of Van Buren, village of Baldwinsville), [MAP]

vi) Fifteen (15) acres between buoy 294 and the Route 370 Overpass (towns of Lysander and Geddes), [MAP]

vii) Three (3) acres downstream of buoy 269 (town of Lysander), [MAP]

viii) Twenty-two (22) acres from the vicinity of buoy 266 to the vicinity of buoy 256 (town of Lysander). [MAP]

ix) Twelve (12) acres from approximately .4 miles north of the Route 31 Bridge to the vicinity downstream of buoy 222 (Town of Lysander). [MAP]

Development of the permit applications was coordinated with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Water chestnut is a highly aggressive non-native aquatic plant that has become widespread in the Three Rivers system of Central New York. The fifteen (15) acres between buoy 294 and the Route 370 Overpass (towns of Lysander and Geddes) and the three (3) acres downstream of buoy 269 (town of Lysander) will be treated with Rodeo, a glyphosate product manufactured by Dow AgroSciences. Clearcast, an imazamoxproduct manufactured by SePRO Corporation will be used at all other locations. Both will be topically applied by a licensed chemical applicator. The product USEPA registration number for Rodeo is 62719-324 and for Clearcast 241-437-67690. Treatments targeting only water chestnut plants are scheduled to be conducted starting
Monday, July 31, 2017 through Thursday, August 10, 2017.

A map showing the treatment areas is available for public viewing at the Onondaga County Health Department-Division of Environmental Health Office, 12th Floor, John H. Mulroy Civic Center, 421 Montgomery Street Syracuse, New York from 8:00 AM-4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
