Projects to improve water quality

Projects to improve water quality

Quick reference
Status of projects
Current projects

Onondaga County is engaged in a massive effort to prevent pollution from reaching Onondaga Lake and to improve treatment of wastewater at the Metropolitan Syracuse Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Status of projects

By the end of 2005, the County had completed 24 projects required under the Amended Consent Judgment (ACJ)—about two-thirds of the mandated projects. See map below.
 Upgrading treatment:
Many improvements have been made. New facilities are showing results in reducing ammonia and phosphorus.
See construction photos of this state-of-the-art project.
 Fixing the collection system:
Look at the many ways that untreated sewage and debris are prevented from reaching Onondaga Lake.
 Ambient monitoring program:
An extensive program is in place to determine how the quality of water in Onondaga Lake is improving—including live data from the lake.
