Derek T.

Shepard, Jr.



Derek is a graduate of C.W. Baker High School and a lifelong resident of Baldwinsville. He received his B.A. from Syracuse University in 2000 with a dual major in Psychology and Political Science. He completed his J.D. degree at Syracuse University College of Law in May 2012 and was admitted to the New York State Bar.

Derek served the senior community professionally from 1993 until 2009, taking his first job at West Side Manor Assisted Living at the age of 14, eventually becoming the Administrator at age 24. In August of 2009, Derek resigned his position as Executive Director of Parkrose Estates Retirement Community, a 100-unit independent senior living community in Liverpool, in order to attend the College of Law at Syracuse University where was the recipient of the Chancellor ’s Scholarship and past-president of the Federalist Society. He is currently an attorney in private practice at Farrell, Martin & Barnell, LLP in Baldwinsville.

Derek began his career in public service when he was elected to the Van Buren Town Board in 2007. He served as chair of the town’s Personnel Committee, as the municipal representative on the Board of Directors at the Canton Woods Senior Center, and president of the Greater Baldwinsville Economic Development Agency.  He was elected to the County Legislature in 2011, representing the Towns of Camillus, Elbridge, and Van Buren. Derek has served previously on the Facilities and Environmental Protection committees, and currently serves as Chairman of the Planning & Economic Development Committee, and as a member of the Ways & Means Committee.
