Forensic Evidence Specialists Unit

Deputies in this unit process crime scenes, analyze evidence, and apply scientific methods in the examination of property to determine its probative value. They work at the Crime Lab (Center for Forensic Sciences, see below) and are provided with the latest equipment needed to examine items such as tool marks, latent prints, altered serial numbers, questionable documents, footprints, body fluids, firearms, and alcohol and drug evidence.

Their duties include applying techniques to enhance and develop latent prints and footprints, conducting comparisons of latent prints using SAFIS and other systems, conducting comparisons of footprints, conducting firearms and ballistics examinations, conducting drug examinations, and providing expert testimony in a court of law.

Center for Forensic Sciences

In 1999, the Crime Lab moved from the Sheriff’s Headquarters building to the newly built Center for Forensic Sciences. This state-of-the-art facility also houses the Syracuse Police Crime Lab, Medical Examiner’s Office, and forensic offices of the Onondaga County Health Department.
